Working on a 1:4 ratio with one of the Roxoff team you'll spend an intense 2 days being introduced to the Scottish mountains in winter. Covering the essentials of ice axe and crampon work, the snow pack and navigation.

This is a no frills course but provides the best instruction around. Bunk house accommodation, with dinner on the Saturday night and breakfast and lunch on the Sunday along with free transport to and from Edinburgh if required.

You will arrive in the evening at our bunkhouse accommodation to meet your instructor and fellow course mates to sort out your kit for the next three days.

In the morning you’ll set off with one of the Roxoff instructors for three days and two nights wild camping in a remote corner of Scotland. We keep this course small so you get a fantastic experience of remoteness and we always try to go to areas where we have great scenery and little chance of seeing other people.

During the three days all meals from breakfast on the first day till lunch on the final day will be included along with the tents and cooking kit. On the third day we will return to our bunkhouse so you can get cleaned up before heading home.

The Roxoff navigation courses are run with the approval of the National Navigation Award Scheme and after attending a course and passing the assessment stage you will be presented a certificate, bronze, silver or gold depending on which course you have successfully completed.

Bronze is a one day course starting at 9:00am and finishing at 4:00pm whilst the silver and gold are both two day courses. Accommodation and food is provided on the silver and gold courses. All three awards are based in the outdoors so appropriate clothing should be worn. On the gold award the second day is classed as a mountain day.

Roxoff currently offer a 2 or 4 day course based in Scotland. Both courses arrive the evening before the commencement date at our bunkhouse to give you a chance to meet your instructors and settle in. As ever at Roxoff we want you to enjoy good food and hospitality during your stay.

We start the day by looking at the equipment we will need for the next couple of days, cover the basics from how to put on a harness, tying in to the rope and setting up a single pitch climb. We will then help you gain the confidence and ability to enjoy your first day climbing. On the second day we will head off to a different venue to cover more skills and by the end of the day you should have the confidence and skills to go away and set up climbs safely.

If you have chosen one of our 4 day courses we will then introduce you to multi pitch climbing at one of the many great venues Scotland has to offer. Your instructor will have made an assessment as to your climbing abilities and after a review of the course so far will then set this day for you.

On the final day you will have the chance to go multi pitch climbing again, maybe a classic mountain route you’ve always wanted to do or spend the day learning how to lead climb for yourself.

Both courses are inclusive of all food, accommodation and specialist equipment. Instruction on the 2 day course is 1:6, on days 3 and 4 it drops to 1:2.

Far Away Munros

This is one of our most popular courses both by our clients & instructors. We will head north to either the Dundonnell and Fisherfield Hills or Glen Shiel. You will spend 4 days with one of the Roxoff team, exploring these wild and remote areas which boast some of Scotland’s most isolated Munros, including An Teallach, arguably Scotland’s finest mountain or the Saddle along its long eastern ridge also known as the Forcan Ridge.

You will be in a small group (max 4) with one of the Roxoff team who will look after you throughout the course. The course is designed for individuals or small groups with some experience of the outdoors but want the hassle taken out of getting there.

During the course you will be staying in a local guest house and all meals from the first evening to lunch on the final day are included. Transport thoughout the course is included and free pick-up and drop-off from either Edinburgh or Inverness Airport is available if required. So sit back and enjoy the view as one of the team takes the stress out of this adventure.

Emergency First Aid in the Workplace for the Appointed Person
(HSE Recognised)

In-house training at your premises.

Course Description

A minimum six-hour programme (one day) for those who wish to gain knowledge of emergency procedures and attain a recognised qualification in First Aid.

Course Aims

By the end of the course, candidates will be able to demonstrate the essential knowledge and skills needed with threatening emergencies in the workplace.

The Award

The course tutor will carry out an on–going assessment and successful students will receive a certificate recognised by the Health and Safety Executive – valid for a period of three years.

The Appointed Person

Where an employer’s assessment for the First Aid needs identifies that a Four–Day FAW qualification is not necessary, the minimum employer’s requirement is to appoint a person to take charge of the First Aid arrangements.

This includes looking after the equipment and facilities, and calling emergency services when required. Arrangements should be made for the Appointed Person to be available for these duties at all times when people are at work.

Note: Appointed Persons are not First Aiders and should not attempt to give First Aid, for which they have not been trained.

Roxoff is able to offer on-site training to organisations and companies who want to take control of their First Aid needs. The course can deliver the One-Day course for up to 16 delegates, on a nationwide basis. It enables an organisation to choose the most convenient dates and times. Also, Roxoff is able to modify the content of the course according to your specific areas of risk.

Two-Day First Aid at Work Refresher Course (HSE Approved)

Course Description

An HSE approved course that complies with the Health and Safety Regulations 1981 and the approved Code of Practice L74 guidelines for the re-qualification of First Aid at Work certificate holders. First Aid coverage in the workplace is a legal requirement.

Awarding Body

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Who should attend?

The course is open to persons who currently fulfil the position of a qualified workplace First Aider. Delegates must be in possession of a valid (unexpired) First Aid at Work Certificate issued by any HSE Approved training organisation – including voluntary organisations.

Outline of the 2-Day FAW Refresher Course

The major topics covered are:

Aims and Principles of first aid
Prevention of cross–infection during first aid procedures
Basic Life Support, including resuscitation and choking
Management of the unconscious casualty
Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded, bleeding or shocked
How to deal with burns, poisoning and eye injuries
Assessment and treatment of common major and minor illnesses
Emergency transport of casualties
Update of any new or latest HSE protocol changes
Legal aspect of first aid at work
Record keeping and use of equipment

Certification

Four Day First Aid at Work (HSE Approved)

Snow Hole Experience

Experience an overnight stay in a snow hole and extend your winter mountaineering skills on this course.

Get valuable practical experience digging out a snow-hole, walk the Scottish mountains by moonlight and refresh your basic winter mountaineering skills.

Our snow hole experience is based in the Central Highlands of Scotland. The course begins with an evening brief on what to expect and gives you a chance to settle in and meet your fellow course mates in the comfort of the bunk house accommodation.

On the first full day of the course we'll set off after a hearty breakfast to some local venues and refresh you on the basic safety skills needed to work in this environment, looking at avalanche risks, snow pack and make emergency shelters. Depending on the group and conditions underfoot we will possibly take in a local peak for good measure. Back at the bunk house we will sort all the kit out and get sorted for the overnight snow hole. After dinner you will have the chance to join one of our other courses in the evening lecture.

On day 2 we'll set off on the main part of the course, spending the morning exploring the highlands before reaching the snow hole site mid-afternoon and digging in for the evening. This is hard work but once you're in it's worth it. We'll settle down for a rest and help you cook dinner and relax in the truly wonderful surroundings of your own snow hole. Depending on the weather and if you want to, we'll then go out for a short walk after dark (so bring your torch with you!) to let you appreciate the Scottish mountains by moonlight. Then it's back to the snow holes and a hot drink before settling down for the night.

On the final morning of the course we'll collapse the snow holes before setting off and hopefully getting in a few more summits before arriving back at the bunk house late afternoon, giving you the chance of a hot shower and some warm soup before you head home.

The course is aimed at individuals with some winter experience and plenty of enthusiasm. You require your own kit for the expedition (kit list available). Roxoff will provide you with a Goretex bivi bag and the group cooking kit. Four-season walking boots, crampons and walking axe are available to hire if needed.

Winter Skills Course

Come and join the team on one of our popular all inclusive winter skills courses which is set in the beautiful Scottish Mountains.

This course is designed for those with some summer navigation skills and mountain craft, but little or no winter experience.

We leave Edinburgh just after lunch on day one, so if you need picking up from the Airport or town you're welcome to a free lift! Sit back and let us do the driving. On arrival you'll receive a warm Scottish welcome and get to know your fellow course mates and the Roxoff team over dinner. In the evening you'll sit down with your instructor to discuss the plan for the rest of your course.

You will then spend the next 3 progressive days in and around the Cairngorm National Park covering the essential skills needed to go out and safely enjoy the Scottish mountains in winter.

This course is fully inclusive of all instruction, max 1:4 ratio, comfortable accommodation and excellent home made Scottish cuisine. Course sizes are kept small and informal. Unlike some companies we don't come off the hill and say goodbye at the car park and see you the next day. After dinner and an informal lecture you're welcome to join us for a drink in the local Hotel.
